Calder Profiles: Tyler Myers
When Tyler Myers was drafted , Buffalo had high hopes but did not expect him to take the blue line by storm.
In his first season in the NHL, Myers is logging top pairing minutes amongst Buffalo’s defensive pairings.
Tyler Myers, born February 1, 1990, is an American-Canadian professional hockey player. Born in Texas, Myers moved to Calgary, Alberta with his father and stepmother when he was 10 years old. Dual citizenship gives Myers an advantage in the future when playing in International tournaments, which he will.
Myers was ranked fourth among North American draft eligible skaters leading up to the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. The Buffalo Sabres were eager to move up to select him and traded their third round pick in order to swap slots with the Los Angeles Kings from thirteenth to twelfth to select Myers.
Born in Texas, at ten years of age Myers moved with his father and step-mother to Calgary.
In 2005, Myers was the Kelowna Rockets first round draft selection in the WHL Draft. Myers helped the Rockets to a 2009 Ed Chynoweth Cup championship following a junior career-high 42-point regular season. Scoring 20 points during the Rockets playoff run, Myers was instrumental the franchise’s third WHL title and was selected as the WHL Playoff MVP.
Following Myers’ WHL championship win with the Rockets, he was signed to a three-year, entry-level contract with the Buffalo Sabres on May 11, 2009.
Through 67 games played this season for the Sabres, Myers has been nothing short of impressive. He has tallied 36 points on the season (9 G, 27 A) and is a plus nine on the season.
His name has been thrown into the hat for Calder trophy nominations as he is currently ranked third among rookie skaters in scoring. Quite the impressive situation for a first year player straight out of the draft to accomplish.
He has been a key figure to the Sabres blue line during his very young career. As number fifty-seven continues to grow as a player the Sabres will continuously develop a pure, top pairing defenseman.
