Ushering in a New Generation: Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars old age certainly hindered their success this year. After losing coach Dave Tippett over the off-season, the Stars will not make the playoffs this year. Their average age of 27.86 years, though not too old, ranks eleventh in the NHL.

Ushering in a New Generation: New York Islanders

The New York Islanders come in as the tenth oldest NHL team, with a team average of 27.88 years and currently sit in the twelfth spot in the Eastern Conference. The problems that hindered their playoff push, unfortunately, occurred in every possible nook and cranny.

When referencing the St. Louis Blues, a few names immediately pop up: T.J. Oshie, Erik Johnson, Brad Boyes, Andy McDonald, and David Backes. Among those players, only McDonald (32 years) is older than the team average of 27.96 years (the Blues tie with the Minnesota Wild as the sixth oldest NHL team).

Ushering in a New Generation: Vancouver Canucks

Vancouver Canucks v Phoenix Coyotes

Third in the Western Conference, the Vancouver Canucks currently rank as the fourth oldest team in the NHL (at 28.08 years). Oddly enough, only eight of the twenty-six members on their current roster are over the age of thirty. The Canucks don’t, however, have any players under the age of twenty-three (a rarity in the league today).

Ushering in a New Generation: Carolina Hurricanes

Carolina Hurricanes v Washington Capitals

As the second oldest team in the league, the Carolina Hurricanes fell from their Stanley Cup victory in 2005-2006 to rock bottom in the current standings.  Currently in last place in their conference and league, the team carries twelve players over 30 years old — in contrast, the Detroit Red Wings feature thirteen players over 30.
