Pens add grit by signing Aaron Asham
Asham agreed to a one-year, one-way deal worth 700K to come over from Division rival Philadelphia Flyers--where he posted 10 goals and 14 assists. Asham also scored four goals in the playoffs on his way to the Stanley Cup Finals with Philadelphia.

Who could fill those empty roster spots?
NHLHS writer Erika Zimmerman discusses the Pittsburgh Penguins roster holes and wonders who will fill them come October.
Although the offseason isn’t over yet and perhaps another few free agent signings are expected (Please, Ray Shero, give us another year of Guerin!), it’s time to look ahead to training camp…or maybe that’s just me, impatient for hockey! I’ve been speculating lately about who will fill some roster spot for the Penguins. Who’s in the running? Who do I predict will be on the roster come October?

Prospect Profile: Beau Bennett
NHLHS writer Erika Zimmerman profiles the Pittsburgh Penguins first round draft selection from the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Beau Bennett.
Building on his recent tendency to draft quality American’s high in the draft (Ben Hanowski (2009, 2nd round, 63 overall), Alex Goligoski (2004, 2nd round, 61 overall) both Americans), Ray Shero’s first round draft pick was California native Beau Bennett.

Atlantic Division Draft Review
NHLHS Corrospondent Mike Murangi, who covered the draft for NHLHS, breaks down the Atlantic Division in his draft review.
Atlantic Division Draft Review:
Coming to Los Angeles, two Atlantic Division teams did not have first round picks. The New Jersey Devils sent their pick to the Atlanta Thrashers in the Ilya Kovlchuk deal, and the Flyers traded their pick to the Anaheim Ducks in the Chris Pronger deal.
One trade worked; one did not.
In this article, I will review the first-round pick or top pick for each of all five Atlantic Division teams, and late-round picks that may be gems. I will release each of the other five divisions over the next few days. I would love to hear feedback about what you think, or if you have a question about your favorite team please email me at MMurangi@nhlhotstove.com .

Pittsburgh Penguins Offseason Update
NHLHS Pittsburgh Penguins Correspondent takes a look at the off-season to date for the team.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have had one of the more active and productive off-seasons of the Eastern Conference contenders. Still, with a few holes in the roster and two million dollars in cap space remaining, it’s hard to believe the Penguins are done. While many have suggested that the Penguins could round out their roster via trade, this is the latest from the free agency side of things :

Eight(h) is Enough
Congratulations to the second biggest underdog to enter the 2010 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs for, what has been thus far, the most amazing Cinderella run since 1993.
For the Montreal Canadiens, the number eight seed was simply enough. Enough to ignite a spark under a team compiled of averaged sized players surrounded in turmoil from every angle except financially.
And to think, luck was on their side in order to squeak into the playoff picture.

One Team’s Mistakes Are Another’s Victory – Pens Drop Game 4 to Even Series
Prior to tonight’s game, one name, Jordan Staal, was on the lips of everyone in Pittsburgh. In Montreal, many questions about the Canadiens’ future were on the mind of Habs fans. After the game, the tables were turned, and one name, Jaroslav Halak, would once again ring throughout the entire providence of Quebec, while Penguins fans were left with an abundance of questions about their team’s own welfare.
If you ask a dozen Penguins fans why Pittsburgh lost last night’s game, you’re likely to get a dozen different answers. Sometimes hockey ends up this way. The simple answer is that the Pittsburgh Penguins allowed Montreal to hang around for a long period of time. The long answer, however, requires a much more grandiose explanation.

Jordan Staal Skating.
NHLHS writer Erika Zimmerman updates the status of Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jordan Staal.
In game 2 of the Eastern Conference semi-finals, P.K. Subban caught Jordan Staal‘s foot on his skate. Staal skated to the bench on his own strength and did not return to the game.
The next day–this past Saturday–Staal had surgery to repair a lacerated tendon. Sources said that he was out for the rest of the playoffs.
Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma said differently. He confirmed the surgery but said that Staal would be day-to-day.

Pens Regain Series Lead With a Game 3 Shutout Victory
NHLHS writer Joe Depto breaks down game three. A game which we were able to witness the Marc-Andre Fleury we have all grown to know; a playoff monster.
It turns out Jaroslav Halak and the Canadiens aren’t the only playoff team in the Eastern Conference that know a thing or two about slamming the door on opposing team’s offenses.
Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury made the trek to his home providence of Quebec with a significant weight on his shoulders. The NHL’s most extraordinary postseason goalie over the last two seasons had begun to look very ordinary this spring, currently holding the lowest save percentage of any active playoff goalie. With Fleury’s lackluster play being introduced into the fray, so did his wave of critics. Hockey pundits began to question the Flower’s mental meddle, and certain Pittsburgh-area talk shows featured callers suggesting that the Pens play backup Brent Johnson in Game 3.

Taking a Split Back Home
NHLHS writer Christopher Nardi recaps games one and two from the Pittsburgh – Montreal second round series.
With two games down in round two of the Capitals, err… Habs – Penguins series (yes, I’m still surprised, who isn’t?), we’re going back to Montreal with the series all tied up at one.
Both teams lost key players in game one and this series is getting more and more virulent and, in my humble opinion, dirty. A few nasty hits seem to have ended the seasons of key players from both teams: Andrei Markov for Montreal and Jordan Staal in Pittsburgh.

Halak-ing into the Semi’s
NHLHS Montreal Canadiens Correspondent Christopher Nardi breaks down the overall thoughts from the Habs first round series which they wrapped up last night against the Washington Capitals.
When Montreal began the series with Washington, it was obvious that the number one seed in the league just didn’t have what it takes to beat the Canadiens. The Capitals, with the number one powerplay and the most goals scored in the league really had nothing on the team who’s penalty kill clicked at exactly 83%, good for 12th in the league and who had scored on average, 2.56 goals/game, ONLY 1.26 goals/game less on average than the Caps.
