The Man Behind the Mask: Tuukka Rask

The NHLHS Man Behind The Mask series is a profile on some of the best goalies in the league to ever wear the “mask”. We hope you enjoy the latest installment of the NHLHS MBTM series.

As an NHL goaltender, the road to becoming a starter is never easy. Just ask Tuukka Rask of the Boston Bruins.

Drafted 21st overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Rask never obtained the opportunity to play at any North American level of professional hockey by the Leafs and on June 24th, 2006 he was traded to the Boston Bruins for former Cader Trophy winner Andrew Raycroft. The Leafs felt they had their future secured with Justin Pogge in their pipeline. Pogge has since been traded and is now a member of the Carolina Hurricanes.

For Tuukka Rask, this was a blessing in disguise.

The Miro Satan Watch has Ended, Now Where Does He Fit?

Stanley Cup Finals - Pittsburgh Penguins v Detroit Red Wings - Game Seven

The headline says it all Miroslav Satan signed with the Boston Bruins last night according to a Slovakian press release.

In 65 games last year with the Pittsburgh Penguins the 35-year-old scored 17 goals and 36 points total playing over 25 percent over his time with Sidney Crosby.  Even with improved production from his 2007-2008 campaign the Pens chose not to play the veteran down the stretch when they acquired Bill Guerin and Chris Kunitz sending him to the AHL.

In his demotion to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, better known as the baby Pens, Satan scored nine points in 10 games.  With the Penguins in the playoffs the veteran produced six points in 17 games.

So what does this Topolcany, Slovakia native bring to the Bruins?

Clearly the Slovakian Olympic Team thought Satan would bring something to their team, so the Bruins took a flier on him.  Lets take a look at where he could fit on their roster.

Trade Rumors: Savard Signs 7 Year Deal

New York Islanders v Boston Bruins

Bob McKenzie broke the signing earlier today and announced the contract to be front loaded with a 4.2 cap hit over seven years.  With the playmaking center locked in, where does this leave the Bruins?

Surprisingly better than you would expect.

After this year, Boston has both goalies, seven forwards and three defenseman signed with over 12 million in cap space.  Assuming at least four million goes to keeping Blake Wheeler and Mark Stuart that leaves them with 8 million to sign four forwards and two defensemen.  This would give the needed signings an average of 1.3 million per player.  If the team decides to use this space on young players on entry-level deals like Vladamir Sobotka (750K cap hit) or Brad Marchand (821,666 cap hit) then the team can spend up to 1.6 million on each player and so forth.  In the last free agency period, solid players like Vaclav Prospal and Maxim Afinogenov signed for around a million.

Trading Phil Kessel proved to be an invaluable move for the Bruins and is looking better every time the Leafs lose.  With Kessel they would have one more scorer while without him they are able to field an actual team.
