Southeast Division Draft Recap

NHLHS Los Angeles Kings Correspondent Mike Murangi discusses the Southeast Division in his draft recap. Mike is a self proclaimed prospects expert and shows off his skills.

The Southeast had only one team qualify for the play-offs in 2010.  Strange, because the division owns two Stanley Cups with the Lighting in 2004 and the Hurricanes in 2006.

Rangers Acquire White from Atlanta for Brashear, Rissmiller

Jason Arbeitman takes a short look at the New York Rangers’ acquisition of Todd White.

The New York Rangers have announced they have acquired center Todd White, 35 from the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for LW Donald Brashear and LW Patrick Rissmiller.

White has 1 year remaining on his deal for 2.375 million and Brashear had 1 year remaining at 1.4 million, but due to his +35 contract he would’ve counted towards the Rangers cap regardless of where he played. White is coming off an injury plagued season where he only put up 9 goals and 17 assists for 26 points in 65 games.

At first glance this is a great trade for the Rangers as it freed up Brashear’s hit, so if the Rangers decide to waive White and bury him in the minors the Rangers will free up 2.375 mil in cap space. However, I believe this is a prelude to a bigger trade in the near future as well as the re-signing of RFA defenseman Marc Staal as well as the signing of another veteran defenseman.

More as it happens!

Is the Southeast getting tougher?

NHLHS Washington Capitals Correspondent Jodie Smola writes on the happenings within the Southeast Division and how it has become a tougher and better division.

Is it just me or did the southeast division get a little tougher? I do believe they did. I get to see the southeast division a lot here in Washington and as I noted earlier in the year, the Capitals were pretty dominant last season but I’d say change is blowing  in the wind.

Player Projection: Bryan Little

NHLHS Atlanta Thrashers correspondent Laura Astorian takes a look at the Thrashers top candidate to have a breakout season in 2010-11, Bryan Little.

The 2008-2009 season was not a good one for the Atlanta Thrashers, finishing third to last in the Eastern Conference with a record of 35-41-6.  There were a few bright spots that year, like the end of the year flurry to finish on a high note, or the 20+ goal seasons of six players: Ilya Kovalchuk, Colby Armstrong, Slava Kozlov, Rich Peverley, Todd White, and Bryan Little.

Granted, it wasn’t enough to help pull the Thrashers into the playoffs, but many fans assumed that it would be something to build on for the next season.

It Took So Long to Bake Him: Thrashers Let Clarke MacArthur Walk

NHLHS Atlanta Thrashers correspondent Laura Astorian breaks down the reasons why the organization parted was with Clarke MacArthur.

The Atlanta Thrashers have never had a player go all the way to an arbitration hearing until today, and they had obviously never cut ties with a player because of a ruling they disagreed with.  Until now.

Thrashers and Blackhawks Wheel and Deal

NHLHS Atlanta Thrashers Correspondent Laura Astorian gives her take on the deal that took place moments ago between the Blackhawks and Thrashers.

Welcome to Chicago South, ladies and gentlemen.  The Chicago Blackhawks absolutely needed to dump salary, and wanted picks, prospects, and cheap but useful players.  The Thrashers, well, we had a couple of extra picks left over from the Kovalchuk trade, we have a bunch of prospects, and God knows we have cheap and useful players.  Match made in heaven, huh?

Atlanta Thrashers, Stacked in Goal and Uncertainties

The Thrashers are in a position lots of teams and general managers would envy – organizational depth at defense and goaltending.  Say what you will about their management of NHL level talent and players, Atlanta has a good crop of up and comers waiting to duke it out for a spot on the team at this year’s development camp.

Lady Byng Candidate: Tobias Enstrom

It may seem odd to vocally hope that a player gets the Lady Byng award.  Some view it as just the “nice guy trophy,” but if you think about what it stands for, ability has a great deal to do with it.  You have to be able to play the game, and play it without allowing the opposition to distract you in any way.  Fewer distractions equals more points, after all.

Forwards and defensemen alike are eligible for this award, which was given to Pavel Datsyuk last season, who amassed only 22 penalty minutes while accumulating 97 points (32G 65 A).  While not nearly at the same level points wise, Atlanta’s Tobias Enstrom has been demonstrating the past few seasons why he’s deserving of a look.
