It Keeps Getting Better
Five days in, seven overtime games and ten road wins later, the playoffs have been all that we could expect and more.
In what has been discussed time and time again, the National Hockey Leagues second season, also known as the Stanley Cup Playoffs, is all about goaltending.
Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings, Brian Boucher of the Philadelphia Flyers, Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks, Tuukka Rask of the Boston Bruins, Ilya Bryzgalov of the Phoenix Coyotes, Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres, Pekka Rinne of the Nashville Predators, Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils, Evgeni Nabokov of the San Jose Sharks, Marc-Andre Fleury of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Antti Niemi of the Chicago Blackhawks, Brian Elliot of the Ottawa Senators, Jimmy Howard of the Detroit Red Wings, Jaroslav Halak of the Montreal Canadiens, Craig Anderson of the Colorado Avalanche as well as both Jose Theodore and Seymon Varlamov of the Washington Capitals have not only stepped up to make some amazing saves but have been able to keep each and every series even or close enough to it.

Discovering the Underdog
NHLHS writer Anthony Curatolo gives a look at how the underdogs are on top to start this year’s NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.
If you were a betting man who strictly took the underdogs, the first night of the playoffs made you rich.
And as if the first night of the 2010 NHL playoffs completed wasn’t enough, it seemed as if night two would match night one.
Why you ask? The answer is simple. Not one team considered to be the favorite were able to win.

Blackhawks: Dial It Up For the Full Sixty
Beat the Devil’s Tattoo – Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

It’s no secret that the Blackhawks have not played their finest hockey since the Olympic break, but while they seemingly cruised into the hiatus on a 4-game win streak, it’s important to note that they allowed more than 2 goals ten times in the 14 games prior. Many were complaining about the goaltending ad nauseam, but it’s pretty clear now that the problems rest more on the shoulders of the Blackhawks blue-liners than in the net.

The Value of: Peter Mueller
NHL Hot Stove presents it’s “The Value Of” series which will look at some of the names discussed around the NHL who likely will be moved at the March 3rd trade deadline.
In the beginning of the 2008-2009 season nobody in Arizona would think about trading away their top young player: Peter Mueller. The former eighth overall selection potted 54 points in his rookie season, only two years after his draft year.

Sykora Finally Free from Tyranical Benching
Earlier today, the Minnesota Wild placed veteran winger Petr Sykora on waivers, leaving this reporter wondering what is next for the Stanley Cup champion.

Possible Scenarios with Mathieu Schneider Placed on Waivers
Earlier today, the Vancouver Canucks placed veteran defenseman Mathieu Schneider on waivers. Team 1040 AM Vancouver interviewed head coach Alain Vigneault about the team’s recent play and their decision to place him on waivers.
Both the Canucks and Schneider mutually felt waivers was the best route to take. According to reports the team attempted to trade the veteran for the past month, but there were no buyers.
In this cap constrained era of the new NHL his hefty cap hit of 2.75 million is quite the amount to absorb, so most teams should pass on a waiver claim. Now, the speculation changes to the veteran getting put on re-entry waivers, in which a team would absorb roughly a 1.25 million cap hit. Let the rumors begin as to which GM decides to pick up the phone and contact Canucks GM Mike Gillis should he place Schneider on re-entry waivers. As a veteran of 22 seasons and experienced powerplay quarterback, the 40-year-old could help a team in need of depth.
A brief run down as to who might go after his services should he go on re-entry waivers:

Minor Signings Around the NHL
With the National Hockey League roster freeze upon us, we can see some teams trying to find some solutions and bringing in players to their roster. Meanwhile, other teams choose to add to an already bright future.
What do I mean you ask? Let me answer that for you.
Today the Phoenix Coyotes were able to solidify a spot on their blue line by signing free agent veteran blue liner Anders Eriksson to finish out the rest of the year (barring injury) with the big club.
In order to fit Eriksson in to the mix, the Coyotes subsequently assigned David Schlemko to the AHL’s San Antonio Rampage.
Eriksson scored a goal and chipped in two assists in his eight games with San Antonio. Previous to this year, he has appeared in 552 NHL games with six teams, compiling 22 goals and 149 assists over parts of 11 seasons.
With the Coyotes excellent start to the season, it seems to me that they feel the playoffs are a reality. By signing Eriksson, the team adds another veteran to the blue line, one which already accommodates Ed Jovanovski, Adrian Aucoin and James Vandermeer.

Peter Mueller on His Way to Broadway?
Look closely at the picture to the right, it may be the last time you see Peter Mueller in a Coyotes jersey.
The 21-year-old native of Bloomington, Minnesota continues to baffle both his coaching staff and fans alike with his minimal effort and limited offensive production. With only one goal and six points all season, Mueller sits on the hot seat almost begging GM Don Maloney to trade him elsewhere.
If you are keeping score at home, those totals project to an impressive three goals and 18 points.
Since the inception of Dave Tippett into the coaching staff, the entire Coyotes organization seems to thrive. Tippett implemented his system quickly as he took over in preseason with little time to spare. The system teaches his youngsters solid two-way play and evidently turned Ilya Bryzgalov into a Vezina Trophy candidate.
Meanwhile Mueller’s totals have only plummeted from a successful rookie campaign under Wayne Gretzky. Greatly slowing down over the second portion of last season many people had high hopes the talented youngster would turn it around. The right wing played 28 games before watching from the press box since December 14th.
So what will Maloney do with Mueller?

Trade Rumors Hitting the Presses

Busy day in the rumor market, lets take out our magnifying glasses and take a closer look to the Hot Stove:
Larry Brooks of The New York Post discusses the shortcomings on the current Rangers roster. The controversial reporter notes that the pieces that may have value are the same that the team wants to keep.
Most importantly he discusses a trade proposal supposedly between GM Glen Sather and former assistant and current Coyotes GM Don Maloney. Sather would send AHL defenseman and promising defensive prospect Bobby Sanguinetti for struggling forward Peter Mueller.
Although the former 8th overall pick managed a measly six points in his first 26 games it will take more to land him. Still young at 21 years of age, Mueller averaged 48 points through his first two seasons. Regardless of his slump he remains a vital part of a young Coyotes core and probably would not be moved until the trade deadline if at all.

Nylander Clears Waivers, Minor Signing & Trade Rumors

A few things going around the league. Nothing huge on the trade front as can be anticipated. Most rumors or big deals will not materialize until at least February when we have clear cut buyers and sellers.
- Lance Hornby of The Toronto Sun reports the Leafs self-imposed trade deadline has come and passed. Earlier in the year, notably before the return of Phil Kessel, Toronto was expected to have a major fire sale. At this point, I would expect a smaller move along the lines of the Lee Stempniak trade after the period of immunity passes.
- Former NHL head coach Pat Burns says “Vincent Lecavalier will be traded this season.” The article by Vincent Destouches of Corus Sports covers the entire story in which Burns mentions the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers as interested parties. Despite the ties the former coach has to the NHL community this seems like more like speculation than inside information. The 29-year-old is due a whopping $7,727,273 cap hit through 2020 so any deal will have to involve a number of moving parts. The former first overall pick projects to score 16 goals and 68 points.
