Some quick Isles news and notes

NHLHS New York Islanders correspondent Anthony Curatolo dives into the week that was for the Islanders.  Signings, old faces in new places, and a pledge to give back.

What can I say except – well really, you just had to deal with it. Being without computer access, uncontrollably,  for a week has created a time consuming recap on all things surrounding the New York Islanders.

The week that was saw some player signings, a familiar name acquire a new position, and one player touching the masses via social media.  What a fabulous world we live in, eh? Where would we be without Twitter and Facebook as well as LinkedIn for many of us?  The answer is simple: likely buying the local newspapers every day just to get caught up on old news.

In today’s fantastic world that we live in, all you need is an internet connection and a map to guide you through the lovely interwebs.

Where shall we begin?

As we all know, Billy Jaffe was not re-signed by MSG to be the voice of the Islanders this season.  His replacement, Butch Goring. It will be an interesting season from the broadcast booth to say the least.

Catching up on some new player personnel with the Islanders, there were three signings from the organization recently.

Jon Sim will stay with the team for another year as he signed a one-year, two-way deal. Sim brings a lot of energy with his game and, although many of the fanbase may disagree, the coaching staff loves it. He skates hard every shift and does all he can with or without the puck to keep the game flowing. He may not be the type to light the lamp often, but his style of play is not for that as he is frequently used on the third and fourth line – and he does his job very well.

Likely an injury call up as he should start the season with the Sound Tigers in Bridgeport.

Adding to the Bridgeport scene, Andy Hilbert returns to the Islanders organization as well as Rob Hisey.  Hilbert spent most of the 2009-10 campaign in the AHL playing for the Minnesota Wild affiliate in Houston. Hisey also spent last season splitting time between the AHL and CHL.

Depth moves by the club but always valuable.

And last, but not least on this day of catching up was the social media breakthrough by Islanders forward Rob Schremp (@RobSchremp). As Dee Karl, the Islanders 7th Woman (@7thWoman) and team correspondent over at Hockeybuzz.com pointed out in her blog Rob Schremp’s pledge to give back and from the players actual twitter account:

RobSchremp As a way of sayin Thank You, I will make a donation to the @SpecialOlympics when I reach 5000 not “followers” but FANS! Pls Rt #PassThePuck

So Isles fans, I encourage you to spread the word. There is nothing like a player who is willing to help out certain situations that they hold near and dear to their very own hearts.

What Rob Schremp is doing, as well as many other NHL talents is absolutely fantastic. Do your part to help out with the bigger picture.
