What to do about the Bobby Ryan situation?
NHLHS Anaheim Ducks’ correspondent, Selly Heddaeus-Robinson gives her take on the Bobby Ryan contract talks.
Bobby Ryan wants to play in Anaheim; the Ducks want Ryan to stay in Anaheim. Why the hold up?
Contract length. Ryan wants three years; Bob Murray wants to give him four or five.
Understandably, Ryan would like to become an unrestricted free agent in as short a time as possible and equally as understandable, Anaheim would like to have him under contract for as long a period as possible. Giving the Ducks’ 2009-10 leading goal scorer the three years he is looking for will inevitably pose a bit of a dilemma for the team as it puts his contract up for renewal in the same year as those of Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf.
So, what do you do if you’re in Murray’s shoes?
You give Bobby Ryan the 3-year contract he is looking for and when the time comes, you deal with the fact that you’ll have to re-sign three of your top players in the same season.
The 23-year-old, right wing is a player the Ducks can ill afford to lose. In his three seasons with the Ducks, Ryan has topped 30 goals twice, 31 in 2008-09 and 35 in the season that has just passed, as well as adding over 25 assists in each of those two years (26 and 29 respectively). For 2009-10, Ryan was third in points for the Ducks, behind Getzlaf (69 pts.) and Perry (76 pts.), with 64 total for the season. Anaheim needs the young sniper’s point production, size and speed.

Yeah I think you’re right Karen, it would be in the Duck’s best interest to re-sign Ryan for whatever he needs to contiuing to play for them, if he’s a leading scorer, why not, the more scores the more wins, right? So I say sign him up, you don’t want this guy scoring against you, cuz someone else will sign him, you know that!
Exactly Mouse.
The more points, the better chance of winning the game. I am pretty sure that most Ducks’ fans will agree with you and I when it comes to re-signing Bobby Ryan, it needs to be done and Anaheim needs to give him what he wants which would be the 3-year contract.
